MacBook Neo
Apple took aim at Chromebooks and cheap windows machines this week with the release of MacBook Neo. It’s essentially the “iPhone SE” of MacBooks. It looks like it’s going to make a big splash in the consumer laptop market.
One year ago I wrote about my regrets in choosing the large iPad + desktop Mac route. I’m in grad school for another month or so, so I took advantage of the education discount and ordered one.

Rather than constantly linking to this page, soon I will be linking to a dedicated home on the web to evangelize the idea. I hope to convince at least one other person on this planet to make one and maintain it for years.
Miscellaneous Thoughts
- Every time I rent a car with CarPlay I love it. I would rather have CarPlay than Tesla’s infotainment system.
- My notes have cannibalized a lot of the stuff I used to write about on here. :-/
- Things have been really good lately. Generally speaking life is going well. I’m doing my best to appreciate that without foreboding joy.
- I introduced Danielle (HI DANIELLE) to Obsidian. I’m not sure why I’m so weird about advocating for this tool, but for some reason it’s hard. It feels vaguely religious, but not in the region sense.

5. Function as my Master’s Thesis
I don’t think it likely that I can literally I turn in this website as my final assignment in grad school… but I do plan on the site containing whatever I turn in.
4. Serve as the History of My Longest Running Project1
I wrote a History of the Data Journal that involved researching my own history. Turns out I’d been doing Data Journal-esque stuff since before the first recorded day (2013-04-22). I found the same basic concepts dated back in 2010, a full 3 years before I thought I started.
3. Document Clearly Why & How to Build Your Own
This is the primary purpose of the site, and the bulk of the work I’ve done on it already.
2. Be the Home of a (eventual) Series of Videos on the Project
I don’t know if I’ll have the time to make the videos I’d like to make on the project, but I want to.
1. Result in One Single Person Starting a Lifelong Hobby
I’d like this idea to grow legs. It’s such a good thing in my life. I think it could be a good thing in anyone’s.
